ReadyAbout was a booking referral platform built to help small UK boatyards expand their reach. Many of these yards relied on basic websites or third-party systems that suffered from poor SEO and limited visibility. This project aimed to aggregate their listings, improve search and discovery for customers, and provide the boatyards with valuable marketing insights they wouldn’t otherwise have access to.

Why I Built It

Smaller, family-run boatyards often struggle to compete online. Their websites can be hard to find, their booking systems are frequently fragmented, and they rarely have the resources to track performance metrics.

ReadyAbout was developed as an invite-only service that aggregated boat data via third-party APIs and web scraping, presenting it in a unified, searchable, and user-friendly platform. For the boatyards, it provided a steady stream of referrals and actionable metrics; for customers, it drastically simplified the process of finding and booking rentals.

What It Did

  • Aggregated Listings: Integrated with third-party APIs and utilised web scraping to pull in comprehensive boat listings.
  • Unified Search: Provided a seamless search experience, allowing users to easily compare rentals across different providers.
  • Referral Engine: Offered referral-based booking links to drive high-intent customers directly to yard websites.
  • Actionable Insights: Delivered real-time metrics and performance data to participating boatyards.
  • Localised Discovery: Supported regional filtering, creating tailored views for specific boating areas.
  • Management Tools: Included robust admin tools for managing listings, tracking referrals, and running promotions.

What I Learned

This project was one of my first large-scale attempts at building a dedicated product for a specific industry niche. I learned invaluable lessons about scoping, prioritising features, and avoiding “idea bloat” by strictly focusing on a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

On the technical side, it provided deep experience in integrating multiple disparate data sources, handling marketing analytics, and deploying applications using modern tools like Docker and Nginx. More broadly, it taught me how to design software that solves genuine, practical problems for small businesses.
